His family moved to California in 1916, where he became a member of his high school’s football and debate teams. Wayne also served as president of the Latin Society and worked on his high school newspaper as a sportswriter.

The name “Duke” comes from a local firefighter, who called Wayne “Little Duke” because he always walked around with his huge dog named Duke.
