Robert Herjavec is an entrepreneur, author, investor and television personality who has appeared on both ABC’s Shark Tank and CBC’s Dragons Den. He founded internet security software BRAK Systems and IT security company The Herjavec Group. As of 2022, Robert Herjavec has a net worth of $200 million.
Herjavec is from Zbjeg, Croatia. He was born there on September 14, 1962. He and his parents left the country in 1970 after Herjavec’s father, Vladimir, was detained for speaking out against the communist government.
When Robert was eight, the family moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia. They then moved to Toronto, Canada, where they spent 18 months living in the basement of a friend’s house.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and English literature from New College at the University of Toronto in 1984. However, even with a degree, he could not apply for high-paying jobs. So he worked for minimum wage.
Robert began his film career as an assistant director before going into business with Logiquest, where he sold IBM mainframe emulation cards. When he was laid off, he used building security systems in 1990.
In his basement, he worked on an online security software integrator called BRAK Systems. He made a business out of it, and it became a success. AT&T Canada bought BRAK Systems for over $30 million ten years after its inception.
He took a break from entrepreneurship to take up the position of Vice President of Sales at Ramp Network. He returned to the industry to establish his most successful project to date, The Herjavec Group. It was a computer security and information technology company that became the largest in Canada.
With his successful run as a businessman, Herjavec was invited to be part of the cast of Dragon’s Den. He was one of the investors to whom aspiring entrepreneurs pitched their ideas.
He was on the Canadian version of Dragon’s Den from seasons one through six. He then joined the cast of a similar show, Shark Tank, on ABC. He has been a Shark investor since the show first aired in 2009.
Besides his television appearances, Robert is also a published author. He published his first book, Driven: How to Succeed in Business and Life, in 2013. He went on to publish two other books.
Net worth and earnings
As the shark, Robert Herjavec is paid around $50,000 per episode. However, he is expected to make much more from the investments he has made in the show. His most successful bet was on Tipsy Elves, which generated $125 million in sales.
Besides his television investments, Herjavec earns money through real estate transactions. The Herjavec Group and its book sales are also big factors in his $200 million wealth.
Robert married optometrist Diane Plese in 1990. They had three children: Brendan, Skye and Caprice. Unfortunately, they divorced in 2014. Two years later, he married dancer Kym Johnson. The couple have a twin, Hudson and Haven. They live in a Toronto mansion that houses Robert’s car collection.
