Early life

Jordan Belfort was born in Queens, New York on July 9, 1962. His parents, Max and Leah, are both accountants and are from Jewish families. Belfort received a bachelor’s degree in biology from American University.


He enrolled in the dental school at the University of Maryland

It was at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry that he made the decision to enroll. He left his college on the first day after hearing the following from the Dean:

“The golden age of dentistry is over. If you’re here just because you’re looking to make a lot of money, you’ve come to the wrong place. Over the summer between his senior year of high school and his freshman year of college, Belfort and a close friend earned $20,000 selling Italian ice cream to beachgoers from coolers.

Belfort earned a degree in biology from American University. While in school at the University of Maryland, he enrolled in dental school. When a professor said becoming a dentist was not a way to get rich after the first day of class, he left.



Career

At an early age, he worked for a meat company, where he set the company’s sales record in his first week there, among other sales positions, in his early years.
