Manchester United net worth is staggering but Jim Ratcliffe can afford it

Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly expressed an interest in buying Manchester United if the Glazers want to sell.

The 69-year-old, who is one of the UK’s richest people, is CEO of chemicals group Ineos which he founded in 1998.

“If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer,” a spokesman for the billionaire told The Times. “If something like this were possible, we would be interested in discussing long-term ownership.”

A source has also told Sky Sports News that the businessman is “serious” about buying the Premier League club, although he has not made an official statement.

It’s the most expensive football club in the UK and buying Man United certainly wouldn’t be cheap – but the sky-high net worth wouldn’t be a problem for the Ineos owner.

Man United is owned by the Glazer family

For nearly two decades, the Premier League club has been owned by the Glazer family, led by the late Malcolm Glazer.

Malcolm had gathered shares in the club since 2003, then took a majority stake in 2005 through investment firm Red Football Ltd.

Following the businessman’s death in 2014, ownership passed to his six children: Avram, Joel, Kevin, Bryan, Darcie and Edward.

The 90% sake he held was split equally between the children, but Joel and Avram had already been in charge since 2006, when Malcolm suffered a stroke.

Now the couple are co-presidents and the other four children are directors. The Glazer family also owns the NFL team Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
